Jeju: My First Post-Pandemic International Travel

After years of restrictions and uncertainties, the thrill of setting off on international travels has never felt more exhilarating. This newfound freedom to explore feels like a rebirth, an opportunity to rediscover the magic of travel with a deeper appreciation.

And for our first post-pandemic international travel, me and my sisters chose Jeju, Korea. You may wonder, why? Well, it’s because I want to see “beot-kkot”, popularly known as the Cherry Blossom.

Day 1: Travel time – from Baguio to Jeju.

We landed Jeju night time already, meet with our tour guide – Miss Oh, then brought us to a Chicken shop for our dinner.

Day 2: Exploring Jeju's Natural and Cultural Heritage

My second day in Jeju started with a visit to the EcoLand Theme Park. This eco-friendly park offered a charming train ride that meandered through picturesque landscapes and serene lakes. It was a refreshing way to connect with nature and enjoy the tranquility of the surroundings.

Next, we headed to Seongeup Village, a living museum that vividly showcased the island's rich cultural heritage. Walking through the village felt like stepping back in time, with its well-preserved thatched-roof houses, stone walls, and traditional artifacts.

A visit to an orange farm was next on the agenda. Jeju's oranges are famous for their sweetness, and it was fascinating to learn about the cultivation process.

The highlight of the day should be the Seongsan Sunrise (Ilchulbong) Peak, a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site. However, climbing to the top was not allowed on that day because of their routine maintenance. I was not able to see the breathtaking panoramic views of the island.

Instead of climbing, we trekked down towards the sea where we witness stunning panoramic views of the coastline as we descended.

Day 3: Discovering Jeju's Artistic and Natural Beauty

Day three began with a visit to the Ginseng Gallery, where I learned about the benefits and varieties of this revered medicinal root. The place also has this device where it checks if you have existing health condition through your index finger. I was amazed as it revealed that I am suffering from allergies, which is quite accurate.

It was followed by a quick stop at a cosmetic outlet to explore the latest in Korean skincare and beauty products. With the seller’s powerful marketing techniques, we were compelled to buy Guboncho products.

Next, we made my way to Camellia Hill, a beautiful garden boasting an impressive collection of camellia flowers. The vibrant blooms were a sight to behold, and the serene atmosphere made for a perfect leisurely stroll.

The visit to the O’sulloc Tea Museum was an enriching experience. I learned about the history and cultivation of tea in Jeju, and even had the chance to taste some of their delicious offerings.

Our next stop was Cheonjiyeon Falls, a stunning waterfall cascading into a crystal-clear pool. The sound of the water and the lush greenery around the falls created a peaceful and enchanting setting.

The day ended with a fun visit to the Joanne Bear Museum, where I admired an array of teddy bear exhibits, each telling unique stories through these adorable plush figures.

Day 4: We were about to Hike Mount Hallasan but the weather is not good

Day four was dedicated to a DIY adventure up Mount Hallasan, the highest mountain in South Korea. However, due to bad weather, we did not push through with our plan. Another reason to go back to Jeju.

We ended up just strolling around the hotel’s streets - and of course – Eating and Shopping.

Jeju

Day 5: Cultural and Shopping Extravaganza

On our final day in Jeju, we visited the bustling Lotte Duty-Free to indulge in some shopping.

One of the highlights of the day was the kimbap-making with hanbok wearing experience at the Kim and Kimchi School. Donning traditional Korean attire while learning to make this delicious Korean dish was a unique cultural immersion.

Kim and Kimchi School

Our Jeju adventure ended on a high note with a visit to the Arte Museum, an immersive digital art museum that captivated me with its mesmerizing installations.

Arte Museum

Jeju was an extraordinary journey, and each day brought new discoveries and unforgettable experiences.

Jeju

I can't wait for my next adventure!

Stay Home, Save Lives

For the past decades, we often hear/read the phrase “Prevention is better than cure.” With COVID-19 being categorized as Pandemic, NOW is the best time to put it into practice. NO EXCUSES!

And one of the effective ways of preventing yourself from getting this infection is by staying home.
With the implementation of Enhanced Community Quarantine, almost everyone is mandated to stay home. Only those with essential work or errands are allowed to go outside of their residences. Otherwise, you will be apprehended by authorities!

While a lot of people are cranky about staying home, complaining about how they can get through with their lives, some people are taking this opportunity to learn/discover about their selves and capabilities. I, for instance, have taken this time to perform things that are usually done by other people for me. And this includes baking pastries and making hazelnut butter. Also, the ECQ has taught me to make homemade recipes instead of buying ready-made grocery items, such as strawberry jam.

Staying home is an excellent way of preventing/stopping the spread of COVID-19. Make your homestay productive and exciting by doing things that you haven’t done before and by improving your knowledge and skills. You can create your own homemade delicacies that your family will love or perhaps try backyard gardening. You will surely be amazed at how fun and easy things are made. Most importantly, you will definitely become more confident and prouder of yourself once the quarantine is lifted.

Think and act positive and hope that this health crisis will end soon!

My First International Travel Destination

Air travel is far more different than land travel. The risks involve is higher since you will be riding an aircraft, which is a more dangerous form of travel machine. Luckily, I’m not afraid of heights. Still, the feeling of riding an airplane for the first time makes me nervous.

Going International is quite exciting. You get to experience a foreign way of life – from seeing the sights or places the country offers to the kind of food and drinks locals consume.

For my first international travel dated June 2013, I chose Singapore.

Singapore is known for its Merlion, a creature having the head of a lion and the body of a fish. This is the symbol of this country as it depicts Singapore’s humble beginnings as a fishing village. This creature can be seen at Marina Bay and Sentosa.

Getting Around Singapore

Getting around this beautiful country is easy. You can ride a taxi, bus and/or train to arrive at your preferred destination. I recommend riding the train whenever possible because this is the most convenient way of getting to and from different places.

For added convenience, consider getting an electronic smart card upon your arrival to the country so you just have to tap it whenever you ride a train – just make sure to cash in enough amount for the duration of your travel. Also, arm yourself with a map that contains the route of which train – train routes are color-coded on the map so it’s quite easy to navigate. The good thing about riding trains is that when you accidentally got out of the train and discovered that you are in the wrong terminal, you can ride another train without being charged, provided though that you don’t get out of the terminal where you need to tap your card.

Places to Visit

Marina Bay

Marina Bay is surrounded by luxury malls, restaurants, shops, hotels, and sights you must visit. This is known for the colorful trees and flower conservatories of Gardens by the Bay, Helix Bridge, and the tall Ferris wheel. One day may not be enough to get to see all the great things it offers. I recommended walking around the bay and stopping by or visiting world-renowned trendy leisure spots and artistic sculptures.

Sentosa

Sentosa is an island in Singapore that is home to themed attractions, exciting rides/events, tropical landscapes, and pristine beaches.

There are 3 ways to get to this island – by cable car, monorail or boardwalk. If you have the budget, try riding the cable car. But if you want to lose some weight, choose the boardwalk.

Other great places to visit include Chinatown where you can taste some of the best Singapore delicacies and Little India where you can see and be shocked by huge veggies.

Singapore is one of the best travel destinations you must include in your travel bucket list especially now that they offer more sights to see – one of which is the garden at the airport. Indeed, it has become more beautiful as the years pass by that makes me want to visit it again!

Everything You Must Know About the Best Lake Resort in Laguna - Caliraya Resorts Club

Caliraya Resorts Club (CRC), situated in Brgy. Lewin, Lumban Laguna boasts itself as one of the best resorts in Laguna. Whether you are traveling alone, a couple, or as a group, this is a great place to stay and enjoy. Furthermore, this 7.6 hectares of lush greenery is an excellent place if you are looking for a perfect venue for team building activities.

How to Get There

From Manila, ride a bus bound to Sta. Cruz, Laguna. HM Transport, DLTB, and LLI are among the bus liners to choose from. But, if you are coming from Baguio, HM transport is the most convenient option because their terminal is nearby Victory Liner Cubao Terminal – it is at the back of Mang Inasal.

Tell the driver that you’ll drop at the last bus stop, which is in Pagsanjan/Pagsawitan. It takes around 2.5 hours to get there. From there, walk to the other side of the road and ride a jeepney with “LUMBAN” signage. Tell the driver to drop you at Lumban Market/Palengke, which is located at their terminal. Once you get out of the jeepney, walk across the road and go to the tricycle waiting area (they can be found at the entrance of the road going up to Caliraya). Inform the trike driver to bring you to Caliraya Resorts Club (CRC). But take note that the trike can’t take you directly to the resort because you will need to ride a boat to get there, which takes about 1.5-2 minutes.

You may have come across blogs telling about riding a jeepney bound to LUMOT as an easy way to get to Caliraya Resorts Club. But mind you, this option is harder because you have to go to Sta Cruz town proper and look for their terminal - this is the only way you can ride a jeepney going to Lumot, which can take you directly to Caliraya.

Another convenient option to reach CRC after taking off the bus in Pagsanjan/Pagsawitan is to hire a tricycle that will take you directly to Caliraya. Though this option comes with a hefty price as opposed to the other two options, the convenience it offers may outweigh the cost, especially if you have lots of (bulky) bags or traveling with at least 2 companions. The good thing about this option is that you can ask the trike driver to take you to a grocery store or market where you can buy food and other essentials before taking you to Caliraya.

Things to Do in CRC

Enjoy their Free Amenities:

  • Slip n Slide (Mud Slide)
  • Slide Pinoy (Mini-Zipline)
  • Hanging Bridge
  • Earth Ball
  • Obstacle Course
  • Children’s Playground
  • Swimming Pool

Try their Fun-Filled Rides and Other Adventure

There are several fun-filled activities you can try, including Zipline (Regular and Superman), Giant Swing 101, Slide and Fly, Sky Bicycle, Hamster Wheel, Super Slide, and Free Fall. Take note that rates differ during weekdays and weekends.

If you want to try some of their thrilling rides, you can take advantage of their Ride All You Can promo. For just 599 pesos, you can have an unlimited ride to their 6 best seller rides - SKY BICYCLE, SUPERMAN ZIPLINE, ZIPLINE, SUPER SLIDE, GIANT SWING 101 & SLIDE & FLY from 8:00 am - 3:00 pm within the day of purchase. All you have to do is to avail of their Daytour or Overnight Packages.

Among these 6 rides, my personal favorite is the Super Slide where you will be sitting on an air-filled, ring-shaped device as you slip and slide through a 550-foot slide. But since you’ll get wet, this is the last ride you should engage into (apart from Slide and Fly, which I haven’t tried because they have strict restrictions on persons with braces and retainers). The other rides are enjoyable as well but if you tried similar adventures like Bike in the Sky and Giant Swing in Eden Nature’s Park in Davao, and the Superman Ride, Zipline, and Swing in Pugad in Pugo (like in our case), they aren’t as terrifying as it seems. Still, these rides are exciting for beginners. Most importantly, this unlimited ride promo is far more affordable than paying individually for each ride/adventure.

Other Amenities/Facilities

  • They have a clinic you can go to if, unluckily, you are feeling unwell.
  • They offer breakfast, lunch, and dinner if you choose not (or not allowed) to cook your own food.
  • They have a multi-function hall that can accommodate up to 1,500 pax, and other function rooms that can cater to 30-500 pax.

Nearby Places You can Visit, Eat and/or Explore

Japanese Garden

Sunstar Mall – Don’t miss to eat at Doc J Kitchen and try their Halo-Halo and other sumptuous meal.

Arisa / CLA Mall – Watsons and PureGold

Lake Yard Kitchenette – This is the nearest kitchenette you can find, offering Filipino delicacies like kare-kare, bulalo, crispy pata, sinigang (pork, salmon or bangus), and pancit. You can also buy here a local product I highly recommend – Pure Guyabano Juice.

Staying in CRC may be expensive, but they offer affordable packages (both daytour and overnight) that you can take advantage of. You can check out their FB page regularly to know about these. This way, you can also enjoy discounts and exclusive promos on some of their offered products and services, such as their thrilling, fun-filled rides.

Your Guide to Visiting Pagsanjan/Cavinti/Magdapio Falls (2019)

Having the opportunity to personally visit Pagsanjan Falls (Indigenous Name: Magdapio Falls) is a great experience. You get to see, explore, and enjoy one of the World-renowned wonders. But rarely do people know that this is also called Cavinti Falls as this is actually situated in the Municipality of Cavinti, not in Pagsanjan.

How to Get There

There are two ways to get to Cavinti Falls – via boat ride or trekking. The former is a better option if you think you don’t have enough stamina and energy for a trekking adventure.

From Manila, ride a bus going to Sta Cruz, Laguna (Php 166). For us, we rode HM Transport INC. because this is located in Cubao, near Victory Liner just behind Mang Inasal. It takes around 2.5 hours before you reach the last bus stop, which is in Pagsanjan/Pagsawitan. From there, ride a jeepney bound to Cavinti and tell the driver to drop you in Cavinti/Pagsanjan/Magdapio Falls intersection. From there, ride a tricycle going to the Boating Station or to Pueblo El Salvador.

Boat Ride: (Php 1200+)

Head to the Boating Station in Pagsanjan. From there, bangkeros will take you to and from Cavinti Falls. One boat can accommodate up to 3 pax only. Accordingly, it takes an hour before you will reach the falls. (I apologize for having little knowledge about this route because we chose to stretch our legs and lose some weight thru trekking.) You can check this out though - https://news.abs-cbn.com/lifestyle/04/14/14/watch-shooting-rapids-pagsanjan

Trekking Adventure: Pagsanjan/Cavinti Falls via Pueblo El Salvador (Php 285/Php 645)

Instead of going to the boating station, head to Pueblo El Salvador Nature’s Park and Picnic Grove. If you choose this route, prepare yourself to trek 2km going down where you will be passing through 586 metal ladders and rappelling thru 2 30-ft vertical metal ladders. Take note that some metal ladders are too narrow so you have to get down facing it while holding onto the rails to ensure your safety. But after passing thru these narrow metal ladders, viola! Witness the refreshing breeze of Cavinti Falls.

But wait there’s more! The adventure also includes a Balsa experience wherein you will ride a Balsa (Bamboo raft) going to the falls. Behind the falling water is a small cave where you can swim and rest for a while. As you raft back to land, the balseros/guide will pass you under the falling water. Brace yourself for its impact, especially if you are visiting during the rainy season or early in the morning when there’s too much water – it can be painful.

Getting out of Cavinti Falls

If you chose to go to Cavinti Falls via riverboat ride, your exit route is automatically thru boat ride also. But if you chose the trekking adventure, you can either trek back to where you came from or shoot the Rapids going to the boating station.

If you are used to walking, running or hiking, trekking back to Pueblo El Salvador may be easy. Besides, you can take advantage of their promo, which is an Unlimited Rest. If not, you might want to consider riding a boat. Do not force yourself to hike if you think your body can’t take the pressure – you can get dizzy or even lose consciousness if you insist. Just inform your tour guide so he can contact a boat for you.

Other things to consider when choosing your exit route is the accessibility of public transport and your next destination. If, for instance, you are heading back home or going to another tourist destination, a boat ride is a better option because the boating station is along the National Highway. As for the trekking adventure, no public transportation is passing thru Pueblo El Salvador. The only way you can get to Cavinti town proper is by riding a tricycle. Inform the staff if you are ready to head out so they can contact a tricycle for you.

For us, we hired a tricycle to take us back directly to our hotel, which is in Caliraya Resorts Club, primarily because we did not bring extra clothes.

Things to Bring

  • Waterproof bag for your valuables
  • Dry clothes
  • Drinking water and/or Snack
  • First Aid Kit

Important Tips

  • Use a small bag so you won’t have trouble getting down/up the vertical ladders.
  • Wear comfortable clothing.
  • Bring only what you need.

Entrance Fee and Inclusions

Trekking Adventure: 285/pax
Trekking, Rappelling Tourguide, Balsa Experience, Lifevest, and Cavinti Falls experience
Trekking + Boatride: 645pax
Trekking, Rappelling, Tourguide, Balsa Experience, Lifevest, Cavinti Falls experience, boatride, and shooting the rapids going to the Boating Station

Is Travel a Luxury?

When given the time and money to explore any place around the world, everybody would definitely love to do so. Who does not want such, right? I, for instance, will ditch whatever I am doing right away and grab that opportunity.

But what if that moment never happens? Would you not find a way to at least take a leave from your work or business and go on vacation?

Travelling allows you to be in a situation where you do not think of anything but to have fun. It is not only about getting away but also about giving up on becoming productive. Leave everything behind and just enjoy the moment.

You may think that traveling is only for rich people, but it isn’t. You do not have to be wealthy to explore how beautiful the world is. It is possible for anyone to go on a trip even with little money. You just have to learn how to save a portion of monthly earnings and keep your expenditures low.

Travelling does not have to be expensive! Besides, there are already a lot of travel agencies offering affordable travel and tours today. DIY travels are also a great option (if you know where to look for). And with the advent of the Internet, you can easily get travel tips from reputable travel bloggers.

In today’s fast-paced lifestyle, work-life balance is crucial. Take some time off your hectic daily schedule – relax and have fun. Because a lack of work-life balance can lead to burnout. In fact, this can even undermine your happiness.

From that, I believe that travel isn’t a luxury, but a necessity. Start by visiting one place in a year, gradually increasing it each year. Your body, mind, and spirit needs it. Indeed, traveling is the best way to renew and regenerate your life!
